Both columns use your schedule: the standard rate is what a 2,080-hour year implies, the right column is what your actual hours pay.

Salary figures are gross pay before tax — to see what a $75,000 salary leaves you after federal tax, FICA, and state tax, use the take-home pay calculator, or go straight to a single paycheck.

$75,000 a year is $36.06 an hour on the standard 2,080-hour year — but if you actually work 40 hours for 50 weeks (two weeks of paid vacation), the same salary is $37.50 an hour, because the money is spread over 2,000 hours instead of 2,080. Work 45 hours a week and it drops to $33.33.

Two hourly rates, and why both matter

There are two honest ways to turn a salary into an hourly rate:

standard rate = salary ÷ 2,080 (40 hours × 52 weeks — the payroll convention)
real rate = salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks worked)

Payroll, mortgage lenders, and job postings use the first. Your calendar uses the second. On $75,000 the gap is $1.44 an hour — small, but it flips direction depending on how you spend the year:

That second direction is the one people miss. A salaried job that quietly runs 50 hours a week pays 20% less per hour than the offer letter implies.

Why 2,080 hours

2,080 is 40 hours × 52 weeks, and it is the convention behind almost every "annual salary" figure you will see: $20 an hour becomes $41,600, $50 an hour becomes $104,000. It assumes no vacation, no holidays, and no overtime — a 52-week year with nothing taken out. That is why it is a useful comparison standard and a poor description of a real year.

Salaried employees in the US typically work 48–50 weeks after vacation and holidays. Self-employed people often work fewer billable hours than they work total, because quoting, invoicing, and admin time are unpaid.

Going the other way: hourly to salary

If a job quotes an hourly rate, annualize it with the same convention — or with the schedule you will actually work:

Hourly rateAt 2,080 hours a yearAt 40 h × 50 weeks
$15.00$31,200$30,000
$20.00$41,600$40,000
$25.00$52,000$50,000
$30.00$62,400$60,000
$40.00$83,200$80,000
$50.00$104,000$100,000

Hourly workers have one advantage the table hides: overtime is usually paid at 1.5×. A $25-an-hour job with 5 hours of overtime a week pays more per year than the $52,000 in the table, while a salaried job with the same extra hours pays exactly $52,000.

Hourly is gross, not take-home

Every figure here is gross pay before tax. A $75,000 salary leaves about $61,592.50 after federal income tax and FICA for a single filer in a state with no income tax — $29.61 an hour on a 2,080-hour year. That is the number to compare against a contract rate, because contractors pay both halves of FICA and their own benefits.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the annual salary — gross, before tax and before 401(k).
  2. Set the hours you actually work in a week, including unpaid overtime and lunch if you work through it.
  3. Set the weeks you work in a year: 52 minus paid vacation and holidays.
  4. Read the real hourly rate first, then the standard 2,080-hour rate for comparison.
  5. Open the overtime table to see how each additional hour a week changes the rate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the salary by 2,080 for the standard rate: $75,000 ÷ 2,080 = $36.06. For your own rate, divide by the hours you actually work — hours per week × weeks worked. At 40 hours for 50 weeks, $75,000 ÷ 2,000 = $37.50 an hour.

Is 2,080 hours a year correct?

It is the payroll convention: 40 hours × 52 weeks. It overstates the hours most people actually work, because it assumes no vacation, no holidays, and no overtime. Use it to compare offers, not to describe your week.

Does paid vacation lower my hourly rate?

No — it raises it. You keep the full salary while working fewer hours, so the divisor shrinks: $75,000 over 2,000 hours is $37.50, versus $36.06 over 2,080. Only unpaid time off, or unpaid overtime, changes the picture the other way.

What is $30 an hour annually?

At 2,080 hours, $30 an hour is $62,400 a year. If you work 40 hours for 50 weeks, it is $60,000. Including 5 hours of weekly overtime at 1.5×, the same $30 base pays about $71,250 a year.

Is a salaried job better than hourly?

Only if the real hourly rate is higher. Convert the salary with the hours the job actually requires: a $75,000 salary at 50 hours a week for 50 weeks is $30 an hour, which is less than a $32-an-hour job with paid overtime — and the hourly job is paid for every extra hour.

Data sources: The 2,080-hour convention is 40 hours × 52 weeks, used by the US Department of Labor and by payroll systems for hourly-to-salaried conversion.
