Your money back. Nothing withheld?

Estimate only. Based on tax year 2026 federal rules (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32) — for returns filed in 2027. Not included: local taxes, itemized deductions, tax credits (CTC/EITC), AMT, preferential capital gains rates, and the QBI deduction (Section 199A). This is general information, not tax, legal, or accounting advice — consult a qualified professional for your situation.

All calculations run in your browser. We do not collect or transmit the numbers you enter.

Someone earning $75,000 in wages with $9,500 withheld (single, no state income tax) owes $7,670 in federal income tax — so the refund is $1,830, or $70.38 per paycheck over 26 paychecks. Cutting withholding by that much per check would move the money from April into every payday instead. Withhold only $6,500 and the same person owes $1,170.

Where a refund comes from

A refund is not a bonus — it is the difference between what was withheld and what was owed. Three inputs decide it:

federal tax owed brackets applied to taxable income, after the standard deduction
already paid W-2 box 2 withholding
the difference positive = refund, negative = balance due

Only federal income tax belongs in that comparison. FICA comes out at a flat rate with no annual reconciliation, so it rarely contributes to a refund, and refundable credits do the opposite — they can push the number far above anything withholding alone would produce. This page models the withholding side; if you qualify for the Child Tax Credit, EITC or education credits, your real refund will be larger than the figure shown.

The engine is the same one behind our tax calculator, so the refund and the annual tax bill always agree.

The same $1,830, read per paycheck

The refund is the same dollars no matter how often you are paid — what changes is how much of each check was over-withheld:

Pay frequencyPaychecks a yearRefundOver-withheld per check
Weekly52$1,830$35.19
Every two weeks26$1,830$70.38
Twice a month24$1,830$76.25
Monthly12$1,830$152.50

That per-check number is the actionable one. It is exactly the amount to put on step 4(c) of a new W-4 as extra withholding — or to remove, if you would rather have the cash now.

Why withholding misses the mark

Payroll software does not know your whole year. It annualizes each check against the W-4 you filed, and several things break that estimate:

Three ways to fix the gap

  1. Adjust the W-4 now. Any change only affects the rest of the year, so a correction made in September fixes three months, not twelve.
  2. Make an estimated payment. If withholding cannot be raised in time, a direct payment before January 15 covers the shortfall.
  3. Change next year, not this one. If a refund is routine, lowering withholding puts the money in each paycheck instead of parking it with the IRS interest-free.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your wages for the year — W-2 box 1, which excludes pre-tax 401(k) contributions.
  2. Enter the federal tax withheld so far (W-2 box 2). Year-to-date is fine for a mid-year check.
  3. Pick how often you are paid, your filing status, and your state.
  4. Add pre-tax contributions or side income under Advanced options if either applies.
  5. Read the refund, then open the withholding ladder to see what each $25 per check does to it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my refund smaller than last year?

Either you owed more or you withheld less. A raise, a second job, the end of a credit, or a W-4 change all move the refund without any change in tax law. Compare this year's withholding and income side by side before assuming the rules changed.

Is a big refund a good thing?

No. A $1,830 refund means you lent the government $1,830 interest-free and waited months to get it back. The better outcome is a refund near zero, with the same money arriving in each paycheck instead.

What if I owe instead of getting a refund?

You can pay by January 31 with the return to avoid estimated-payment penalties, raise withholding for the remainder of the year, or make a direct payment before the January 15 deadline. If the shortfall keeps happening, fix the W-4.

Does state tax affect my federal refund?

No, they are separate returns with separate withholding. This page computes the federal refund; state withholding is a different comparison, and our state figures are approximations you supply yourself, so no state refund is estimated here.

Does a 401(k) contribution change my refund?

It lowers your taxable wages, so less is withheld and less is owed. If you contributed all year, the two move together and the refund barely changes. A contribution started late in the year, though, can leave a small balance due.

Can I split my refund between accounts?

Yes — the IRS allows a direct deposit split across up to three accounts on the return, including checking, savings, an IRA, or buying up to $5,000 in paper Series I savings bonds. It does not change the amount, only where it lands.

Data sources: Federal brackets and the standard deduction follow IRS guidance for tax year 2026 (returns filed in 2027); FICA uses 6.2% Social Security up to the $184,500 wage base plus 1.45% Medicare. Refundable credits (CTC, EITC, education credits) are deliberately not modeled, so the figure shown is a floor rather than a promise. State rates appear for context only and are prefilled just where verified against a state Department of Revenue — nine states have no wage income tax. All arithmetic runs in your browser. If nobody is withholding for you at all, the quarterly tax calculator sizes the payments instead; for the full-year picture use the income tax calculator.
